All good things must come to an end
First off, I ended up finishing 3rd in the 2 club challenge. I shot 46-35 for an 81 LOL.
Chipped in on 18 for birdie and a skin and netted $25 for my efforts. I ended up using my 17 degree hybrid 4 wood and my 8 iron. I've never had to hit flop shots with an 8 iron before so it was lots of fun. I also putted with my 8 iron and got it going on the back 9 obviously. The winner shot 78 with a 6 iron and a sand wedge.
Anyway, here is where my head is at today:
Dear Membership,
This email is to officially confirm my resignation from *** Golf Club, effective September 1st, 2010. It is unfortunate that we could not come to a reasonable agreement in order to secure my long term future as a member. Hopefully you are aware of the numerous attempts I have made to work something out. My requests have fallen on deaf ears. The past twenty years have been a great experience and I will never forget the memories we have created over the years and the friends, colleagues and staff that have supported me. I still recall my first year as a member in 1990 where I enjoyed the junior program and all it had to offer at such a reasonable cost. Times have changed, but some of the rules have not, which is why I must leave the club and begin planning my future elsewhere. I was really looking forward to signing my children up as members in 2020 and participating in the long term management of the club for decades to come. I am sorry it had to come to this but you have given me no other choice and have remained inflexible and until such time that changes are made to ensure that long good standing members can remain members through times like these you will continue to see people of my generation leave the club.

I'm still sad to hit send, and that is why I haven't yet. I am holding out for some sort of magical reconciliation that might allow me to somehow remain a member... one can dream can't he?
I've flipped and flopped on this for months on end now and I am actually starting to come to terms with this difficult decision. I know it is the right one, but I still can't believe that I'm gonna do it.

2 club Challenge
Tomorrow will be a fun day of golf as we try something new with 16 guys participating. We are going to have a $20 buyin tournament where you are only allowed to bring any two clubs of your choice out on to the course.
No range (laser) finders for yardage. Just two clubs (and maybe an umbrella b/c it is supposed to rain).So the question is - which two clubs? Well first I need to know what tees we are playing from. If it is the blacks then the course will be almost 6700 yards. If it is the whites then the track will only be 6000 yards.
Some guys will chose to bring a three wood and a seven iron. Others will choose to bring a 6 iron and a putter. Maybe someone will even bring a driver and a 9 iron. Who knows! It really depends on where we tee it up and what kind of shots you can hit with those clubs. Obviously having a putter is a luxury that not all of us will have. I might decide to try and putt with my 7 iron or my hybrid. If I use that combo then I better make sure I don't have to carry any water or get in any sand traps.
It's going to be a fun day!
Then we are heading to the BC Lions vs. the Calgary Stampeders game held over at Empire Field. This will be my first game at this temporary venue and I should be good and drunk by the time I arrive.
I've got an exciting night planned tonight too - we are setting up the cribs. Super fun!

6 weeks
The countdown continues as I sit here and realize that we are already into August. Days will fly by and I will no doubt make the best of them as I prepare myself for fatherhood. I have a few more golf days planned as well as a day trip with the wife before she gets too big and uncomfortable with the weight of two little humans growing by the minute. Still lots to do and not much time for other things such as keeping this space current, or playing any poker whatsoever. I have a better chance of playing live poker these days as there are often $5 20BB games that run during parties that carry on into the wee hours of the morning. I tend to stay away from those as well as the time is obviously better spent drinking away my last few opportunites to hang out with friends and not having to attend to dirty diapers and screaming babies. My life is about to take a one eighty and I am certainly not prepared like I would have hoped. Nevertheless I will power through all of the ups and downs, poops and pees just like the rest of the world. As one friend put it to me this morning "it is what you make it." Very true.
My golf career could very possible take a long term, almost indefinite, break and I can very well see my game getting rustier with each diaper genie deposit. Ironically, my golf handicap has reached an all time low for 2010 where I currently host a 1. I'd love to get to a zero in the next 30 days and end if off right. Yesterday helped as I made par on the last 9 holes to half our match vs. the best team in the league. We could make the playoffs if we win our final match, which would also be a great way to end my golfing career as a non-dad. I'll probably have one last game with my standard foursome and then take a leave of absence from my club for who knows how long. It is depressing to think about but I know that it is the right choice. The only choice that makes financial sense. Hopefully I can tee it up there one day in the distant future and get back the form I once had as a married guy with no kids and no financial burdens.

Club Championship 2010
Finished fourth. Scores were 76-77-77. Couldn't shake the bad shots and I really only made 2-3 mistakes per round. Which cost me at least 6 shots. I lost by 7...
I was in the final group with the defending champ as well as the guy I beat in the semi finals of the match play. They were both tied heading into day 3 and I was 4 shots back. I couldn't get it done and the defending champ won with a birdie on the 54th hole. That makes it 3 of 4 years for him.
Frustrating because I know that this was probably my last legitimate chance to get my name on that trophy again. With only 6 weeks to go until my life changes forever, I still am on the fence as to what my choice will be with regards to my long term future at the club. After 20 years, maybe it is time to take up public golf. After all, I doubt I will get out much anyway and my focus will be on my family and making sure I can provide them with everything they deserve.
While being a member of a private club has some serious privledges I can't help but think that the cost is just too great to justify staying while the kids are so young and playing sports of their own. My first strategy will be to take a leave of absence starting in September. However I will only be saving 75% a month and won't even be allowed to play the course without paying a green fee.
I'll end it here as this post is getting a bit annoying to type as it is all I think about these days when I don't have twins on my mind.
