That was one crazy match! Penski put up a good fight but I managed to keep it together and finished strong. So I guess that makes it my second tournament win in as many starts, which is a great feeling as I head into this BC Day long weekend where I will be teeing it up for our stroke play Club Championship.
I won the match play back in 2006, so this is my second victory of it's kind. Finishing second last year left a bad taste in my mouth. I almost let it happen again too!
I started the match out as I did my previous two rounds with a birdie on the first hole to go one up. That didn't last long as I pulled my tee shot into the water basically giving him the hole and we were back to even. I rolled in a putt on four for birdie and I was back to one up. Then I let him have it back on 5 and 6, we tied 7 and he made a deuce on 8 to go 2 up. Just like that.
We tied the 9th and then I just kept playing my game on the back 9. I won 10, 11, 12 and 13 all with pars and one birdie. All of the sudden I was now 2 up with 5 to play. 2 par fives left gave me some comfort but somehow he birdied 14 to get it back to 1 down. Then it happened.
He was greenside in two and needed an up and down for a par. I was on the green in three after punching out from the trees and wedging it to about 15 feet. It was his turn and he did the unthinkable.
The double chip. This is where you basically hit the ball and then the club follows through and somehow hits the ball again in mid air. This also counts as a stroke. So now he is lying 4 and putting for 5. He two putts and so do I (safely) and I go back to 2 up. From there it was smooth sailing and I put the match away on 17 after he inexplicable found the water. I felt bad for him but at the same time I was very excited inside to take it down and win another trophy.
Paul was choked because he really did have me on the ropes there for a while. I am just glad I didn't choke myself as I felt like I was the favorite heading in. Glad I got it done before the stroke play event this weekend too. After finishing 2nd in 2007, 1st in 2008 and 3rd in 2009 I feel like it is my time to win this thing all over again.

Baseball playoffs last night did not got as well. We lost the first game as well as home field advantage. Tonight is game two and we are going to have to hit a hell of a lot better if we expect to extend this series and play for it all tomorrow night.

Match Play Finals
Tomorrow is the day. After winning my semi-final match last Saturday I find myself in the finals for the second year in a row. However this year I plan on winning it.
My match last week was against the guy that I lost to in the finals last year. Redemption was mine. It certainly wasn't easy though. It was a good battle. I came out on the winning end because my putter was on fire! I had seven birdies during the match and another on 18 when it was all over (the match was 4 and 2). I'll need that magic again tomorrow if I want to take down Penski.
Penski is a good buddy of mine and also my scratch league partner. We always have fun matches and tomorrow should be no different. He's very good at scrambling and making clutch par putts so I will need to roll the rock and drop those bombs.

Rush Poker Tip (old news?)
I am not sure if I am telling you something you already know... but here it goes.
It's a very simple minor tip, but I find it works very well in various stages of the game for a few reasons.
Basically if there is a scenario where you thought "man I wonder what they have" then the simple way to beat the system is to let your time bank run out.
Let's say you raise in MP and then face a re-raise from the button and then the BB shoves. You are holding a decent hand, but not one you want to go to the wall with, especially early on during donkey hour.
Just let the time bank run out and sit out. You will not move tables. You will get to watch the entire hand showdown and then AFTER the pot is shipped you are moved to a new table, often times staying at the same table as one or both of the two players playing for the previous pot.
I do this a lot, not only for the reason above but also to slow myself down when the blinds are low and I want to take my time observing some of the players. I can also take the time to make any additional notes like "BB monkey shoved over a raise and a re-raise with AJo" or whatever.
Give it a try.

1.78M chips with 77 people to beat! I like those odds, although his stack is not THAT healthy compared to some of the BIG stacks out there. Keep an eye on Meloche. This is HUGE. If he somehow makes it to the N9 I am booking my flight and the kids are comin' with me! Lola will def. disagree but I can't see how I would not go considering this would be a once in a lifetime chance. I'm just kidding about the bringing the kids part obv.

Mark Meloche is a buddy of mine who plays poker for a living online (400NL up to 800NL). I knew that he was in Vegas for the last month (rented a house with some Pokerstars dudes) because he was unable to play golf. He's a member at my course (which is how I met him) and plays to about a 2 handicap. His closer golf buddies (in age and friendship) were all railing him throughout the day and I found this out after our round today. I just assumed he was down there playing cash games and a few small tournaments. I haven't even heard if he bought in our won a satty.
Sure enough, he is still in it after 5 days! He's currently at 530K with 235 remaining. In the money for at least $48K!!
Give him a shout out! Rail him if you are in Vegas!! Be sure to let him know that Schaubs and the rest of the Q (he will lol) are pulling for him. He's good shit.
Of course, I've sent him emails and texts since finding out. I haven't heard back from him because the next minute I was writing this post!
I'll keep you posted if I hear anything interesting.

Bloggers are boring
Seriously. No one has anything to write about anymore? I am getting tired of going to google reader only to find the very few consistent bloggers out there putting up posts on a daily basis. I don't get it, but I am sure there is a different excuse for almost everyone. I've got to say it is a bit unmotivating to write anything worthwhile in the space when it doesn't seem like anyone is really reading here anyway. The stats don't lie, unless statcounter doesn't count those who follow using google reader? Is that possible? Anyway, whatever your excuse is it really doesn't matter what I think. Everyone is entitled to do whatever they want and write as frequently or infrequently as they want, right? Who am I to judge.
Top 5 blogs that I follow that write something daily:
Tao of Poker (obviously #1)
Kid Dynamite's World (not always poker, but a great read)
Poker Grump (lots of good variety)
Pokerati (the straight goods)
Hard Boiled Poker (the goods straight)
Wicked Chops Poker also gets a mention here, but the link is blocked by the man. I also think their might be a team of writers on WCP so I am not sure they qualify under this context.
When I look back at this list I realize "wow these guys are on a whole other level compared to your typical blogger that I know." In fact, there is only one dude on this list that I can really actually call my friend (defined in the Schaubs blogger world as "met or chatted with more than once"). Ok, there are some exceptions. Yes, you. No not you, that person there beside you silly. Him. No, not him, the other guy. Oh and her, sure why not. Ok ok, and you too.
I don't think it is fair to compare these 5 (6) ass kicking poker writers to your standard blogger type who gives weekly updates or a non-poker related snippet into their real life. I am not saying one is better than the other because each serve a different purpose. Most of those guys are pros. They write to make money, or to at least work on their craft. Their passion that is writing. me? I have no passion for writing. I have a passion for free rolls. That is why this all started remember! I've got to say though, I miss reading the other stuff. The good stuff. The stuff that you probably say to yourself "man, that's not blog worthy." I like that stuff. So get to it!
I've noticed a lot of poker bloggers have become just plain bloggers. I include myself at the top of that list, no doubt. I actually enjoy that stuff even more as I am sure I speak for most readers when I say it is more interesting than reading hand histories or bad beat stories. Waffles rants are also in their own category. Heck, he IS a category. Although his last few posts have been pretty weak talking about how terrible of a baseball coach he is. I liked it better when he would write about trying to get laid. I've met Waffles a couple of times ladies. One word: Pimp.
So where do I go from here? I've asked myself this many times. I guess I will keep at it when I have time, just like rest of you. Life happens. (always link yourself if you have a chance... see how that works?)
Anyone else out there looking for content or is it just me who needs to get a life? I'd love to hear from a lurker who might read this and surprise me by actually saying something of value.

Golf Tilt
My first round match was set for last Saturday morning at 11:30. I had an appointment near my club that set up perfectly for me to arrive at the golf course a half hour before my tee time. I was seeded 5th and would take on the 4th seed in this bracket style competition otherwise known as match play.
I arrived at 11am as expected. I strolled up the walkway only to see my group already on the first tee! To say I was confused would be an understatement. I was blown away and could not understand why my group was teeing off a half hour early. I knew it was a mistake as I had not received a second email from the proshop stating that my original time had changed. I was confused but quickly reacted and ran to my locker to get my golf shoes. I had not time to warm up, let alone hit even one practice putt. Not the start I was planning on obviously.
I was equally pissed off at my group as I was at the proshop. I could not understand why on earth my group would put up with what was happening. Then I realized - this was to their benefit. The other twosome was the 1 and 8 seed. In other words, my second round opponent should I succeed and make it to the next round. Now I am not one to be a conspiracy theorist, but seriously - something was up... or so I thought.
I took my verbal jabs at them as best I could to try and level the playing field. I called them all sorts of names as I fiddled with my bag and struggled to grab the right golf ball, glove etc. I realized after I walked down the first fairway after my drive that I was playing with the only good golf ball left in my bag. More stress.
So how did it go? Birdie on one, and another birdie on two to go two up right out of the gate! I was happy and relieved that I had this small cushion as I continued to stretch and take some practice swings on the third tee.
Off into the trees it went. I lost the 3rd and 4th hole but birdied the 5th to get it back to 1up. I ended the front 9 one up after making birdie there too. 4 birdies and only a 1up front 9 to show for it. I remember saying to myself "I'll take it."
After finally feeling warmed up and focused I started to settle in. I didn't make too many mistakes save for the three putt on 14 for par. I tried to roll in the 40 foot eagle putt to really lay down the hammer but blew it by a good 6 feet and missed the one coming back.
I lost the 15th and won the 16th to remain 2 up with 2 to play, otherwise known as dormie. It wasn't over just yet because I dumped my shot into the water on 17 and was now only 1 up with 1 to play. My competitor didn't really lay on the pressure though and I knew I would be able to reach the par 5 in two while my opponent was a bit further back and was forced to go for it. This would be his demise. A par on 18 was all I needed to seal the victory.
Now I face my buddy whom I lost to last year in the finals. He is the #1 seed again this year and I intend on taking him out! It's time to continue my winning ways... in golf at least.

I wonder if that will get me any extra hits?
Seriously, wtf is with this guy. I used to think he was the next Michael Jordan. Literally. He had the potential to be that good. Maybe he still does, but this latest stunt is very very un-Jordanesque. Any tard that holds out for his own one hour show to annouce which team he is going to sign with has dropped a rung in my books. Ghey! I don't care if the proceeds are going to invent time travel, it is stupid (proceeds are going to Boys & Girl club which is a very worthy cause). But still!! Ghey!!!
We all know he is 95% certain he is going to go back to the Cavs for three more years at the maximum and then if he doesn't win a title by then he will bounce on out of there. I probably didn't watch more than 5 basketball games all year and even I know this much.
Why doesn't he just stick to basketball and dunk contests. If he wanted to truly market the Lebron brand then he should be signing with the Knicks and grow up under the big bright spotlight permanently.

World Cup vs. NBA Finals
So when you prevent a goal using your hands in soccer, you get a red card and are suspended from the next game... but when you use your hands in basketball and prevent a game winning shot it is called goaltending and the basket counts. One team wins and the other loses. Makes sports all the more exciting and competitive if you ask me.
So Ghana get's screwed out of the semi finals (although they did miss a penalty kick in minute 91) of the World Cup while Uruguay has their best player suspended with four Countries left in this brutal tournament. This country has less people than the city of Vancouver and Team Canada can't even qualify.
LJ was right, soccer would be a good way to go for the kids. That's what I did. I'm one of those few Canadians that never played hockey as a kid. Hope I can afford to give my kids the chance.

Golf Update
I've been trying to get in as much golf as possible but it's just not happening as frequently as I had imagined. With the new purchase and the increased duties at home trying to get the bedroom ready as it begins its transformation into a nursery, there just doesn't seem to be as many free weekend days as there used to be.
I have a match lined up for tomorrow as I enter the quarter finals of our club match play. Hopefully that goes well. I did play a team match on Wednesday where our club pulled off a 5.5 to 3.5 point victory. It's a 6 on 6 format with each match worth 3 points.
We headed down the 9th hole and we were one down. The front 9 is worth one point, the back is worth another point and the overall is worth a third point. I blasted a drive down the right side but found the fairway bunker. It had a shallow lip so I decided to go for the green on this par 5 from about 210 yards. I pulled it a bit and the ball came to rest up against a lip of one of the green side bunkers. It was one of those shots where you don't have much green to work with and I only had one foot in the bunker as I lay my right foot up along the downslope of the hill that protected the backside of the green.
I chopped it out to about 15 feet and rolled the birdie putt in for the half. We headed out to the back nine all square and battled through the first 7 holes. We walked to the 17th one up. All we had to do was force them to make a birdie but sure enough my partner and I both hit our second shots into the water relinquishing our lead. We headed to the 18th hole tied at even. I bombed a driver down the right side and this time I would cash in. I hit my 4 iron from 209 yards to 8 feet and rolled in the putt for the eagle and more importantly - the win!
Winning never gets old. I love the pressure. As I stood over my 8 footer I said to myself "this is for the win, time to make it" and I did. If felt great to be clutch under pressure and secure that extra point for the team and the overall victory.
Our team is now 3 and 1 and we are tied for 2nd place overall in this 10 team league. We've never been to playoffs in my 12 years of participating. Now that I am running the team, if we can make it into the playoffs it will be that much sweeter.
I heart golf.

We headed down the 9th hole and we were one down. The front 9 is worth one point, the back is worth another point and the overall is worth a third point. I blasted a drive down the right side but found the fairway bunker. It had a shallow lip so I decided to go for the green on this par 5 from about 210 yards. I pulled it a bit and the ball came to rest up against a lip of one of the green side bunkers. It was one of those shots where you don't have much green to work with and I only had one foot in the bunker as I lay my right foot up along the downslope of the hill that protected the backside of the green.
I chopped it out to about 15 feet and rolled the birdie putt in for the half. We headed out to the back nine all square and battled through the first 7 holes. We walked to the 17th one up. All we had to do was force them to make a birdie but sure enough my partner and I both hit our second shots into the water relinquishing our lead. We headed to the 18th hole tied at even. I bombed a driver down the right side and this time I would cash in. I hit my 4 iron from 209 yards to 8 feet and rolled in the putt for the eagle and more importantly - the win!
Winning never gets old. I love the pressure. As I stood over my 8 footer I said to myself "this is for the win, time to make it" and I did. If felt great to be clutch under pressure and secure that extra point for the team and the overall victory.
Our team is now 3 and 1 and we are tied for 2nd place overall in this 10 team league. We've never been to playoffs in my 12 years of participating. Now that I am running the team, if we can make it into the playoffs it will be that much sweeter.
