Analyze This

I rarely post hand histories here and I'm not sure why. So I figured... why not? Many of the cash game players that I read usually post some sort of analysis of a hand or two on a regular basis. Well, I am not a cash game player, but I aspire to be one. So I thought I would post a few hands from last night's session (after getting a few points in the Riverchaser). Speaking of the Riverchaser I thought that thing started at 6:30 PST when in fact it started at 6pm... goes to show you how many of these BBT events I've actually played in when I don't even know the start time. I showed up 45 minutes late and 1/3 of stack was already gone. Managed to chip up right away and stick around for a while. Ran my BB QJd into Alceste's Aces when I flopped the donkey TP and IGH.

It would be great if I could get some feedback from a few of you. Pick one or two and let me know what you think.

Hand 1 - you know I dont might the occasional TPTK check IP. He obviouslyhad nothing to pay you off with. C'est la vie.

Hand 2 - why show A5 there?

Hand 3 - its ok - best not to build big pots on XXY flops - not worth it

Hand 4 - just terrible - BET you moron

Hand 5 - hammer is gold

Hand 6 - TPIG

Alan aka RecessRampage said...

Hand 1 - I would go ahead and bet out on the flop but it doesn't look like you would have made any more money there so I don't think there's any problem.

Hand 2 - I actually don't like how you played the hand. You overplayed a nothing hand and was lucky to be able to get the guy to fold. Even more so, I don't like showing my bluffs. I'd rather show them a hand that was a winner so that I could bluff them off in the future instead of trying to get them to call me because more often than not, weak tight players won't make calls even if they've seen you bluff unless you're doing it a ridiculous amount. And if they have a hand, they'll call you regardless cuz that's what donks do.

Hand 3 - River bet would've just made you lose more money because you showed weakness on the turn. Now at that point, the donk had to figure he was ahead and on the river, the 9 couldn't have possibly saved you. This is, however, a situation where you could make the exact same play if you had a 2 in your hand or made a straight on the turn or had 99 and boat the river where you can overbet on the river and I think you will still get the call.

Hand 4 - It would have been interesting if you bet out on the turn after you check called the flop. The donk might fold anyways but he might now call drawing to a gut shot straight or even better might raise you to see if you're just acting like you made a straight. Either way, river bet wouldn't have done anything, IMO.

Hand 5 - Who is that stud that was watching???

Hand 6 - SHIP IT!

LOL at Fuel's comment... BET you moron... lol
Nice.

lol at both fuel and alan's comments. who was that modest stud watching?

i am always hesitant to bet out my sets, but then i end up in a situation where i check raise turn and they fold, whereas i think i'd make more money getting people to call my bets all the way down. for many people (myself included, on occasion) top pair is gold, and as i've painfully learned recently, it isn't always.

jamyhawk said...

I wonder what the percentages are that TP holds up? I guess it depends on the top card.
I play at the .10/.25 level and it seems that TP is a dog, but probably because there are more players drawing out at the lower limits.

I do agree with recessrampage that showing a bluff online will come back to bite you more than help. I will occasionally show a winner that everyone folded to, to help my bluffs later.

Good post.
